Abstract

771,560. Hand-operated knitting machines. STRIWA AKT.-GES., and REES, K. Aug. 21, 1953 [Sept. 11, 1952], No. 23172/53. Clssa 74 (2). As the latch needles of a flat knitting machine descend, under the action of a cam carriage 5, reciprocated by hand along guide bars 2, the newly-laid yarn engages arcuate edges 11a of sinker-like members 11, rotates them about their pivots 26a through position B into position C (which is variable to determine loop size) against the action of return springs 12 or 13, the yarn slipping past hooks 11b into recesses 11c as it does so. As the needles rise again, the members 11 are returned by their springs, to the starting position, to hold down the newlyformed loops. The position C is determined by engagement of the tails of members 11 with cams on a shaft 15 which can be rotated, to vary this position. The members 11 may be raised together by cams on a manually rotatable shaft 25. Rigid L-shaped stops, co-operating with resilient buffers on the cam carriage, may be rotated about their locating rods, or shifted axially therealong, for removal of the carriage, which bears acentre cam 27 slidable between a lower operative position, Fig. 14, and a higher inactive position. The cam 27 may be slid by means of a knurled knob, screwed up or down on a pin to release or secure the cam, or through a lever-like handle 49 which is urged into either of its extreme positions by the action of springs 53, 54. A bar 30 prevents fouling of the corners 27a of cam 27 by reason of excessive retraction of needles if the carriage is traversed without yarn being fed. The ends 30a of the bar 30 are, in turn, protected by needle-deflect. ing springs 31. Edges 34a of sheet metal members 34 prevent the outermost loops of a course from slipping off the hooks 11b. Bentup edges 34b assist in preventing premature closing of needle latches. The outwardly inclined and upwardly bent ends 34c provide smooth passage of the needles and open prematurely closed latches. Easy laying of the yarn is provided by overlapping loops 34d between which the yarn is pulled from below, and over one or other of the arcuate edges 34g of which it is wrapped into a co-operating form guiding recess 34f. The number of traverses of the cam carriage is recorded by a counter 42 thereof, Fig. 2, operated through a spring-urged plunger 44 bearing a member 46 engaging suitably positioned stationary actuating members 43.
