954,221. Knitting machines. C. W. PERRY, R. B. CRAWFORD, S. M. ORR, and R. J. FROEBER, [trading as GORDON CO.]. Oct. 24, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 36431/60. Heading D1C. In a rotary cylinder circular knitting machine with main and auxiliary knitting stations 17, 20, individual yarn cutting means and yarn clamping means are provided for each knitting station which are both released by the same actuating device. The yarn cutting means comprise cutting elements 36 on a fixed support member 27 co-operating with sharp-edged teeth 35 on an annulus 32 rotating with the needle cylinder. The yarn clamping means comprise clamping members 90, 97 co-operating with restraining elements 85, 96 for the knitting stations 17 and 20 respectively. The member 90 is adapted to be raised by a pneumatic cylinder 92 and member 97 is actuated from member 90 by a lever 101. Guide fingers 21 for the yarn at both main and auxiliary stations 17, 20 are adapted to be retracted to move the yarns from knitting position as required by means not shown. When such a guide finger is retracted the yarn is carried down by the last needle to knit this yarn to engage a tooth of the annulus 32. The yarn is then carried around by the needles and annulus to pass over the respective restraining element 85 or 96 to be engaged under the clamping member 90 or 97 and then to be cut by the severing element 36 which is moved by a cam on a pattern drum to engage the annulus 32. When a yarn is tb be returned to knitting position the relevant guide finger is moved to its active position and the yarn is drawn into engagement with the annulus 32 by the first needle to knit the yarn and the yarn is drawn beneath the restraining element whilst being held above by the clamping member. The yarn is then again cut by the severing element and the waste length is released from the clamping member, by actuation of the pneumatic cylinder 92, to be sucked away into a receptacle 116.
