Abstract

480,262. Knitting -machines. MILLER, M. C. Aug. 18, 1936, No. 22775. [Class 74 (ii)] A multi - section straight - bar machine is provided at each end of each section with a cutting and clamping device for yarns taken out of action. The devices being simultaneously actuated by means including a control shaft common to them all. Movement of the control shaft may be made manually or by pattern mechanism, the control shaft being operated in time with the knitting mechanisms after it has been given an initial movement. Each device comprises two grabs 58, two clamps 82 and two cutters 166, and one grab, &c. of each device is actuated to cut and clamp an idled yarn at the right-hand end of each section, and thereafter the remaining grabs, &c., are likewise simultaneously actuated. The grabs 58 of each device comprise oppositely disposed curved arms provided with saw-tooth edges to engage the yarns, and are pivotally mounted upon a slide 56 movable in the direction of needle line. The slide is controlled by a lever 60 pivoted at 62 and having a pin 68 engaging in a groove 70 in an actuating lever 72. The grabs are held in retracted inoperative position by springs 102, 110 and are moved into operative position upon movement of the slide 56 by latch levers 120, 122. The levers 120, 122 are also pivotally mounted upon the slide 56 and engage cam surfaces 140, 144 on the vertical wall of the guide slideway. Yarn pushers 150, 152 co-operate with the grabs 58 to push the withdrawn yarns into the clamps, and comprise thin stampings with V-shaped yarn-engaging ends. The pushers 150, 152 are controlled by a slide 154 also operated by the lever 72. The cutters 166 are actuated by coiled springs 170 to cut the yarns, and are released from latches 174 by slides 186 also actuated by the lever 72. The clamps comprise clamping levers 82 yieldingly held by springs 84 against covers 76 for the slide guideway. In operation, the control shaft is moved axially in one direction carrying with it the lover 72. The slide 56 is therefore moved within its guideway to operate one set of grabs 58 to engage yarns taken out of action, and arms 204, 206, 208 at its upper and forked end are brought into register with the slides 154, 186 corresponding to one set of pushers 150 and cutters 166. Thereafter, the control shaft is rotated so that the lever 72 actuates the slides 152, 186, so that the yarns withdrawn at one side of each section of the machine are clamped and cut. Subsequent axial movement of the control shaft operates the other set of grabs 58 and permits operation of the other pushers 152 and cutters 166,
