Abstract

347,822. Machinery guards. WARDROP, T., Pritchard Street, Chorlton-on- Medlock, Manchester. March 13, 1930, No. 8098. [Class 80 (iv).] In a collarblocking machine wherein the articles are supported on a board d which is adjustably carried by a table c reciprocated along stationary guides b, Fig. 2, by an automatically reversed friction drum q, a finger guard g is provided in front of the ironing roller h beneath which the collars pass. The guard, which may be in the form of a flattened sheet metal tube, is pivoted to fixed brackets i, and rods j<1>, Fig. 2, j<2>, Fig. 3, are pivoted to the opposite ends of the front edge of the guard. When the guard is tripped during the passage of the table from right to left, the reversing-mechanism is instantly operated to reverse the direction of movement of the table which then travels to the extreme right-hand end of its stroke where it moves off the friction drum and remains stationary until it is moved back by hand. The rod j<1> is pivoted at its lower end to a plate a which is set on edge and is carried by pins b<1>, b<2> which project from the guide rails b into inclined slots a<1>, a<2> in the plate. The top edge of the plate normally lies out of the path of the tappets el, e<2> which are carried by the table and which coact with a striker arm to operate the reversing-gear for the friction drum. The rod j<2> is pivoted to a latch k which normally engages a pin o on a rod p to hold down a lever m against a spring l. The lever m is connected with the reversing-gear. When the guard is raised the latch k swings counterclockwise to free the pin o so that the lever m is swung by the spring l to operate the reversing-gear to move the table from left to right, the table continuing to move until it clears the friction drum. Movement of the guard also raises the plate a through the link j<1> so that the top of the plate is in the path of the tappets e<1>, e<2> thereby raising and maintaining them raised so that they clear the arm of the reversing-gear instead of contacting therewith as they normally do. The guard is reset by depressing the lever m and the tappets are reset by rotating the shaft f on which they are mounted by means of a handle r, Fig. 2.
