Abstract
162,549. Scarab Oil Burning Co., Ltd., and Macdonald, F. R. Sept. 16, 1920. Spray burners.-In a self-starting liquid-fuel burner in which the liquid fuel is atomized at starting by compressed air from the upper part of a water reservoir passing through a coil or pipe heated by the burner, and subsequently, when the coil is sufficiently hot, the compressed air is shut off and water from the lower part of the reservoir is passed through the coil and converted into steam to act as the atomizing-fluid, the coil is mounted so as to be adjustable relatively to or removable entirely from the burner when another supply of atomizing fluid becomes available. In the arrangement shown, the water reservoir b is connected by valved air and water pipes c, d and a pipe g to the burner-supporting frame or casting which is divided into two chambers l, m. The coil h is mounted adjustably in passages t<1>, t<2> in the frame and is connected at its ends to the chambers l, m by means of flexible tubes s<1>, s<2>. The pipe g leads into the chamber l and a pipe r connects the chamber m to the burner i. The chambers l, m form lime separators for the air and steam respectively. A large opening in the frame may be substituted for the passage t<1>, t<2> so as to allow the coil to be removed entirely. The burner may be used to heat a small boiler for generating steam. Part of the steam so generated may be used as the atomizing-fluid when available, the coil being then removed to minimize wear. In another arrangement the water reservoir constitutes a small boiler which is heated by the burner to raise steam for starting and operating larger burners. The small boiler may supply steam to its own burner when available.
