Arrangement of bearings.-In a horizontalshaft steam turbine having its casing f built directly on to the condenser g, the bearing c for the exhaust end of the turbine is arranged directly in the exhaust chamber of the turbine, and is connected with the atmosphere by a pipe n, which may enclose the member e coupling the driven shaft d with the turbine shaft a. A chamber p communicating with the atmosphere by a pipe q is arranged between the bearing c and the stuffing-box h, to prevent transfer of steam and oil from one to the other. The pressure oil for lubricating the bearing c is admitted by a pipe o. A manhole r and a lidded aperture s allow the bearing cover to be removed and the bearing c and stuffing-box h to be inspected without removing the top of the turbine. A bent pipe m connects the stuffing-box chamber k with the chimney i. The machine to be driven may be disposed on the opposite side of the turbine from that shown in the drawing, the casing of the bearing c being in this case completely shut off from the condenser.
