Abstract

215,638. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Aug. 10, 1923. Cooling bearings.-The packing box 16 of a turbine or other shaft is connected in a yielding manner to the turbine casing 6 and is rigidly secured to the shaft bearing 11 or other stationary part. The box 16 is secured at the outer end to a ring 25 carried by the bearing 11 and cap 12 and at the inner end is secured to a corrugated sleeve 34, attached to the turbine casing. A ring 31 secured to the ring 25 is formed with grooves, in one of which works an impeller 33 on the shaft. The impeller draws in air through the spaces between washers 27 and discharges the air, together with leakage fluid, into a passage 39 in the bearing discharging through a pipe 41. The circulation of air serves to cool the bearing.
