Thermionic detectors; audible reception of unmodulated continuous waves. - A wheatstone-bridge arrangement comprising a thermionic valve in one of the balanced arms is employed to detect signalling eurrents, particularly of a frequency below audibility; it may also serve to receive continuous-wave wireless radiators without heterodyning or the use of a " ticker." A source of current 13 of audible frequency is normally balanced across the arms 1 - - 4 so that no note is heard in the telephones 16. When signal energy flows through a resistance 22, the potential on the grid 8 of a valve 5 is varied and alters the resistance of the plate circuit of the valve, thereby upsetting the bridge balance, so that the note from the source 13 is heard in the phones so long as the signalling current flows. A second valve may be inserted in the arm 2 nf the bridge to facilitate balancing. A valve amplifier may be used to augment the note in the telephones.
