Abstract

184,862. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). May 18, 1921. Thermionic detectors; audible reception of unmodulated waves.-A receiver for continuous waves comprises a four-electrode valve arranged in conjunction with a battery to produce a negative resistance in the cathode-third-electrode circuit. Received signals are applied to thecathode-discharge-controlling-electrode circuit and means are provided in the system for producing continuous audio-oscillations. In an example a resistance 14 is included in the cathodethird-electrode circuit adjusted so that the system is normally just not oscillating. The circuit 9, 10 and preferably the circuit 12, 13 are tuned to the received high frequency and loosely coupled so that normally there is little transfer of energy from the audio-source 8. On the reception of signals, modulated high-frequency currents appear in the circuit 12, 13 and are rectified so as to produce an audible note in the telephones 15.
