Thermionic detectors; audible reception of unmodulated continuous waves.-A thermionic valve 1, with a tuned grid circuit and a retroactively coupled plate circuit, is started into self-oscillation when waves of the proper frequency are received in the aerial 10, and the change in the steady component of the plate current destroys the balance in a wheatstone bridge, so that currents of audible frequency from a local source 24 become audible in a receiver 21. On the cessation of the incoming waves the valve 1 stops oscillating and the receiver 21 becomes silent again. The upper arms of the wheatstone bridge comprise the plate circuits of valves 12, 13, and the valve 1 has a connection through a shunted condenser to the grid of the valve 12 so as to control its effective resistance. The valves 12, 13 may be balanced by adjusting the resistances 28, 29 in the filament-heating circuits.
