Abstract

537,937. Wireless receiving systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 15, 1940, No. 4884. Convention date, March 15, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] In a diversity receiving system, means responsive to a voltage dependent on the amplitude of signals applied to the receiver are used for selectively connecting the input of the receiver to one or other of a pair of antennae. The input 4 of a receiver 1 may be selectively connected to either of a pair of antennae 5, 6 by means of a relay 7 having opposed windings 9, 10 arranged in the anode circuits of a pair of gas discharge valves 20, 21 having control grids connected in parallel to a source of negative A.V.C. potential 3. As shown antenna 5 is in use and valve 20 is drawing current from source 22. If now the signal on 5 fades the grids of valves 20, 21 become less negative until suddenly valve 21 starts to draw current. The fall in potential across 24 acting through coupling condenser 25 reduces the potential of the anode of 20 so that it ceases to conduct. The current through 21 acts on coil 10 to switch over to antenna 6. In a modification the antennae are connected to the receiver through tuned circuits and a pair of thermionic valves which are alternately biased to cut off by the current through the discharge tubes 20, 21. In a further modification, the control potential for the grids of the gas discharge tubes 20, 21 depends on the differential effect of the rectified carrier and audio frequency in the received signal, and operates to switch over the antenna when the carrier has faded so as to produce more than 100 per cent modulation. In all cases, time constant circuits may be provided in the grid circuit of valves 20, 21 to prevent oscillation.
