439,528. Wireless receiving-apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Radio Corporation of America; 570, Lexington Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 10, 1934, No. 29049. [Class 40 (v)] In a wireless receiver switching is provided for operation as a double sideband receiver with high selectivity or as a single sideband receiver with high fidelity and means are provided to ensure appropriate tuning. The Figure shows a superheterodyne receiver embodying a high frequency amplifier 1 frequency changer 3 and intermediate frequency amplifier 5 in which, with the switches 23, 55, 77 in the positions shown, high fidelity reception is obtained since the tuned circuits respond to the whole of one sideband. Operation of the switches gives high selectivity with some sideband cutting. The muting of the amplifier 5 is through a highly selective circuit and amplifying valves 81, 113, 117 which with high fidelity ensure tuning so that the received carrier lies at the side of the band of frequencies received. Delayed automatic volume control is effected by rectifier 83. In television reception increased gain is obtained by receiving only one sideband. Detuning may be effected by switched inductances, condensers, or couplings.
