Abstract

501,760. Automatic tuning and selectivity control. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., KEALL, O. E., and RUST, N. M. Sept. 4, 1937, No. 24229. [Class 40 (v)] A radio receiver provided with automatic control both of tuning and selectivity has the two systems interlinked in such manner that operation of the selectivity control causes the tuning control to tune away from an interfering signal. The A.S.C. system shown is applied to an IF amplifier 1 having a forward reaction coupling comprising the screened half-wave line 8, resistances 10, 11 and condenser 9, while negative feed-back is obtained by virtue of coils 18, 19 in the cathode leg. To these coils is coupled a normal type of selectivity control discriminator comprising two circuits 20, 21 tuned 9 kc. above and below the mid-frequency of the I.F. band; the resultant of the two. opposed rectified voltages is applied over 29, 30 as control bias to the amplifier 1 so that selectivity increases as signal strength decreases. The A.F.C. discriminator 36, 37 is of usual type coupled to a further I.F. amplifier 33. The resultant voltage applied over 44 to the frequency correcting device depends on the joint action of the A.F.C. and A.S.C. discriminators, since the resistances 41, 42, 31, 32 are in series. Depending on whether the interference energizes circuit 20 or circuit 21, the A.F.C. control voltage is so modified thereby that the tuning is centred to 'that side of the carrier remote from the interference. The selectivity of stage 1 may be varied in dependence on the relative strength of signal and interference by shunting resistance 23 by a tuned circuit, coupled to a subsequent I.F. stage and tuned to the I.F., in series with a diode rectifier, Fig. 2 (not shown). The variation in selectivity may be effected by a meter movement in the anode circuit of valve 1 which mechanically varies the coupling of the input and output circuits of that stage, Fig. 3 (not shown). Specification 479,991 is referred to.
