Abstract

559,535. Frequency modulation ; automatic volume control. PHILCO RADIO & TELEVISION CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1942, No. 11665. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1941. [Class 40 (v)] In a frequency-discriminating detector circuit for the reception of frequency-modulated waves, the load resistances of the rectifiers are connected in series-aiding relation for D.C. voltage so as to provide a voltage suitable for automatic volume control, and are connected in a reversed relation for providing audio output voltages. The circuit may be arranged for the alternative reception of ampli'ude-modulated or frequencymodulated waves without switching. The I.F. wave in circuit 9 is applied bv the coils 3, 4 in phase opposition to the rectifiers D1, D2 and in quadrature phase by the tuned circuit 5 loosely coupled to the circuit 9. The load resistance 1, 2 of the respective rectifiers are connected in seriesaiding relation by a high resistance 10, 20 so as to provide at AVC a direct or slowly-varying voltage for regulating the gain of the receiver. The resistances 1, 2 are connected in opposed relation by an audio-frequency condenser 8 so as to provide the audio output voltage across the two cathodes of the rectifiers. When the circuit is required to receive amplitude-modulated waves, a circuit tuned to a much lower I.F. than the circuit 9 is connected in series with that circuit, and is coupled to a secondary tuned circuit connected between the coil 4 and the condenser 8. The AM signal is rectified by the diode D2 and appears across the resistance 2, and may be taken off at the same terminals as the FM signal, Fig. 3 (not shown). Specifications 181,799, [Class 40 (v)], 489,094 and 559,967 are referred to.
