Abstract

455,649. Wireless receivers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, and LINSELL, A. A., 80, Crystal Palace Park Road, Sydenham, both in London. April 26, 1935, No. 12558. [Class 40 (v)] A receiver operating over a short wave television range and as a sound broadcast receiver is provided with means on switching to television to broaden the frequency response of the sound broadcast receiving apparatus which is employed as an intermediate frequency amplifier so as to pass the relatively wide band of frequencies occupied by television signals and to fix the tuning of the broadcast receiver. The Figure shows a supersonic heterodyne broadcast receiver preceded by a short wave frequency changer 3 so that the signal frequency circuits of the broadcast receiver serve as the intermediate frequency amplifier on short waves. The broadcast receiver is tuned to the required frequency and its frequency response increased to pass the sideband frequencies required in television by switches 10, 10<1> which replace the variable tuning condensers by fixed condensers and insert damping resistances 12, 12<1> while the response in the intermediate frequency amplifier is increased by damping resistance 16. Instead of shunt resistances series resistances or combinations of resistance, inductance and capacity may be used to broaden the response band of the receiver, alternatively the grid bias may be adjusted to vary the valve damping. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the switch operation is conjoint with the tuning control being operated when this control is adjusted to a predetermined, e.g. minimum wavelength position. The fixed tuning capacities may be formed by the self capacity of the coils.
