Abstract

159,433. Shaw, A. G., and Haynes, F. W. April 28, 1920. Catches, automatic.- In a fastening fur swinging doors or gates, a casing 7, with an open bottom, is attached to the gate-post by screws 8, the lower screws supporting rings 9, which can be swung inwardly and moved upwardly, but are prevented from moving outwardly by abutting against the side walls of the casing 7. To the free end of the gate is secured a lug 5, which, as the gate is closed, forces one of the. rings 8 upwards, the, latter dropping behind the lug as soon as it has passed, to secure the gate in the closed position. To open the gate, one of the rings 8 must be raised by hand. An upper lug 6, which may be in the form of a headed-pin carrying a roller, is secured to the end of the gate, and is adapted to engage with the top edge of the casing 7 to prevent any droop of the gate in the closed position. For a door or gate opening in one direction only, one ring only is employed. When applied to a sliding door or gate, the ring 9 is secured in the plane of the door or gate and the tongue member 5 is provided with an upwardly projecting portion, so that on closing the door this projecting portion raises the ring, which then falls behind it on to the shank or main portion of the tongue to secure the door.
