Operating doors by cranks, lever, link, and like mechanism.-A machine for handling coke-oven doors is so constructed that one end of the door is withdrawn more rapidly than the other end so as more easily to break the luting. The back plate 5 of the coke-oven door has lifting hook sockets 6, 7 which are engaged by hooks 48, 55 on levers 47, 54 pivoted at 51, 58 on links 49, 56 secured to side frames 30, 31. Springs 53, 60 absorb any shock when contact with the oven door is made, and a rod 61 serves to equalize the movement of the levers 47, 54. The frames 30, 31 are supported not only from yokes 14, 15 running on rails 10, 11, by links 41, 42 pivoted to the frames at 45, 46 but also by a shaft 34 on the ends of which are pinions 35, 36 and flanged wheels 37, 38 travelling on rails 28, 29 supported by the yokes 14, 15. When the machine is moved up to the oven door by reason of the toothed wheels 35, 36 coacting with racks 39, 40 on starting the motor 74 which through suitable gearing operates a bevel-wheel 67 secured to shaft 34, the hooks 48, 55 are raised into engagement with sockets 6, 7 by rotation of a hand-wheel 65 which by a worm and screw device draws down the outer end 64 of the lever 47. When the backward movement takes place, the rear portion of the carrier 30 is initially depressed by the link connection 41 thus giving the door a more rapid movement at the top than at the bottom.
