[Class 51 (ii).] In apparatus for charging coke ovens with rammed coal cakes, the complete ramming box or the side walls thereof are, after the charge has been rammed, moved close up against the oven door opening, so that the side walls of the box serve to guide the coal cake during its transfer to the oven. As shown, the side walls 6 of the ramming box 5 are connected, through members 7 which allow the walls to be drawn apart after ramming, to a wheeled framework 8 adapted to be moved on rails 10 fixed to the carriage 1 which supports the hopper 4, rams 24, and coke pusher 3. The framework 8 is moved on the rails 10 by rack and pinion gearing 11, 12 operated from a motor 13, a second motor 25 being provided for actuating a chain 18 which is secured at 19 to the bottom plate 16 of the ramming box and serves to move the latter into and out of the oven. The plate 16 carries shields 20, 21 which engage with and support the ends of the rammed cake. In operation, after the cake 23 has been rammed and the walls 6 drawn apart, the motor 13 is operated to bring the end 26 of the box 5 close against the door frame 27 of the oven 22 ; the bottom 16 is then actuated to carry the cake into the oven. To retain the charge in the oven during withdrawal of the bottom plate 16, the shield is detached from this plate and secured temporarily to the walls 6.
