Abstract
480,991. Discharging coke ovens. WOODALL - DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., MoEWAN, M. H., and BUCHANAN, W. G. Jan. 25, 1937, No. 2123. [Class 51 (ii)] A coke guide for use in discharging horizontal coke ovens is mounted on a carriage movable on rails along the oven battery and comprises fixed side walls 5 to which are hinged, on vertical axes 12, auxiliary members 6, 7 adapted to be turned outwards to form continuations of the walls 5, and thus prevent spillage, and to be folded back across the end of the fixed guide into a position such that the machine may be moved without risk of fouling the buckstays 17. The members 6, 7 are actuated through levers 11 by handles 9, 10, and are held in their extended position by a bottom apron-plate 13 and an upper spacing member 15, these latter being hinged on horizontal axes and operated simultaneously by a hand lever 14. The handles 9, 10 and 14 are interlocked with the control for the traversing movement of the machine so that the latter cannot be moved until the auxiliary guides and the spacing members 13, 15 have been returned to a position clear of the oven battery. The shielding effect, during coke discharge, of the auxiliary guides on the buck stays 17 may be increased by covering the outer sides of the former with sheets of heat-insulating material such as asbestos.
