Abstract

1303548 Coke oven charging cars SIMONCARVES Ltd 11 Jan 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 1260/71 Heading F4B A coke oven charging car includes a hopper 1 and at least one charging pipe 2 provided with a telescopic sleeve 3 adapted to be fitted over a top charging hole 17 of a coke oven. In operation with the sleeve 3 sealingly abutting the charging opening frame 8, the charging hole cover 5 is removed up through pipe 2 to a position above hopper outlet 15 by electromagnetic grip 4, and coal fed from hopper 1 via a vibrating trough 23 or a feeder table (Fig. 1, not shown) to charging pipe 2 and into the oven. Probes 13 sense the coal level in hopper 1 to cut off the coal feed whilst the coal level is still sufficient to prevent the escape of charging gas through the hopper, after which cover 5 is relowered, sleeve 3 raised and the car moves on. Within charging pipe 2 is located a charging funnel 6, formed from a plurality of vertical sections 21 linked only at their upper edges, which is raised to position 6a during raising end lowering of cover 5 to provide a clear passage for the latter, but is lowered to abut frame 8 when coal is being charged to guide the coal into the oven. Seals 12 prevent coal falling into the gap 9 between the funnel 6 and sleeve 3, whilst wedge surfaces on the inside of charging pipe 2 (Fig. 1, not shown) or spring loaded or pneumatically operated radial pressure pins 11 projecting through the sleeve 3, urge the funnel sections 21 together to correctly form the tunnel in its lowermost position. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the hopper is located directly over the charging pipe, flow from the hopper to the pipe being started by the raising of a hood from a lowermost position in which it blocks off the hopper outlet.
