In coke oven batteries with horizontal coking chambers vfor the production of gas and coke, the modern procedure requires separate mechanism whereby the coke is pushed by means of a pusher head on a ram rod or b-arcarried by a pusher machine movable on the so-called pusher machine side of-the oven battery from one to the others of the oven chambers for pushing the coke towardsthe opposite, so-called coke side of the battery. It happens that as a result of-present day advancefin structures or existing apparatus of these batteries, the tolerance or allowance for. economy, maintenance and the space for housing a coke oven battery audits ape purtenancesis very limited. By the present invention a combined solution of the space problem, the maintenance requirements and economy is provided considerably reducing the space required for housing the actual coke pusher machine and completely releasing in-this space for other purposes on the pusher machine side,v without omitting the actual pushing from thepusher side of the entire coke cakev throughv the usualv guide means into a quenching. car on thewopposite side of'the battery while atthe same time reducing the maintenance requirements and cost of operation of the pushing; and levelling apparatus. According. to the invention a` separate transport frame orcarriagecarryingthe detached pusher head is preferably arranged on the pusher side-of the battery opposite the coke side. The combined .arrangement for operating the coal level--V ling and coke withdrawal means. from theY coke side makes possible a substantial saving of operating personin known manner by remote control in such manner that the remote control is effected from the service station of the coal levelling and coke extracting operating machine station from which the slow moving of the quenching car relative to the extractor head can be more readily watched during the extraction of the coke. In this way simultaneously with completion of the coke pushing, the operator on the machine for coke extracting can also push a button to start the quenching car to the coke quenching tower and a switch, which is operated on the movement of the quenching car, then may be set to start the quenching of the coke and again stop it by means of a time relay. A By means of the apparatus arranged and constructed according to the invention for such operation in extracting coke, the usual safety devices can also be omitted which frequently are provided for the purpose of providing assurance of alignment in the same position of the coke pusher machine on the machine side and the coke guide car and quenching car on the coke side, and which requires a more or less complicated construction and considerable expense and maintenance.
In case of an instance of a door of the to-be-emptied oven chamber being unopened on the pusher side of the battery opposite the coke side, in order to assure that the coke extracting leveler rod does not hit against the door while sliding it through any of the oven chambers, the doors on the pusher side of the battery are provided with a self-sealing inclined flap which is held in the closed sealed position by gravity as a result of its own weight or augmented by additional weights, or even by spring pressure, such doors are opened by the thrust of the extractor rod on pushing the crown space whenever the oven chamber door has inadvertently not been lifted. I A further object of the invention is to arrange a drive rack for the leveler rod laterally on its side face in order to keep the teeth free of coke particles, such as in H. Koppers Patent 2,354,030.
In order to avoid the danger of bending or sagging of the leveler rod in the oven chambers, the latter can be provided with lateral runners by which it is guided on projections and indentations on the chamber walls, as is known in other patents of Koppers Company, Inc. for levelling rods for levelling the coal charge of the oven chamber.
The invention is illustrated in the best mode known at this time in the accompanying drawings wherein:

In the illustration of the oven battery it is assumed that the coal charged into the oven chambers through charge holes 1 of the top 2 of the oven by means of a conventional charging car is coked and the so-formed coke cake must be pushed horizontally out of the oven chambers. For this purpose a transport machine 5 is movably arranged by means of wheels 6 on tracks 7 along the oven battery on the coke side 4. The machine is portably mounted and spans a coke quenching car 8 which is also movable along the coke side of the oven battery and is provided with inclined bottom 9, and the machine also spans a stationary coke ramp, which is within range of the inclined bottom 9, and also spans a channel 11 connected with the ramp 10 and provided with conveyor belt 12.
On the machine 5 there is installed on rolls 13 a coal leveler rod 14 which has a lateral rack 14 which is driven by means of a drive 14 as in said H. Koppers Patent 2,354,030. In the drawing the combined coal leveler and pusher head leveler r'od 14 is represented in the position in which it ha's been moved through the usual gas collecting space 15zof oven chamber 3 in which it reciprocates for coal levelling as common in this art, with the leveler bar supported by runners on a ledge; connoted by the straight line at the level of the gas space,Y 15 in Fig. 3.
A coke guide means 16 consisting of the conventional two vertical side walls is connected with the combined coal leveler and coke extracting head bar transporting machine 5. The coke guide means 16, 0r its bottom 17, can be moved closer alongside the buckstays 18 past the oven vchambers in order to assure a satisfactory transfer of the coke cake, as conventional. v
A pusher head transporting frame or carriage 19 is movably arranged on the pusher side of the battery 4 by means of Wheels 20 on tracks 21 of the accessible platform 22 which frame 19 is preferably associated with the door lifting device as conventional, and hence not shown in the drawing, for the doors on that side of the battery, and supports a pusher head 23 such as is conven tional and necessary for pushing out the coke cake in modern practice. The pusher head 23 is movably in`- stalled in guide means 24 of the transporting frame 19 by means of grooves and connected with rod 14 by a forked connection Z6. Before sliding the rod 14 in the gas collecting space 15 of the oven chamber 3, the trans porting frame 19 is brought in front of the oven chamber so that the upper end of the pusher head which is either furcated, or passes into the opening of a furcated portion of the end of the leveler rod 14, is connected with the coal leveler rod 14 whereby the pusher head is coupled with the leveler rod and is supported by the late ter. In order to reinforce the pusher head somewhat theforked lever 26 is pivotally mounted in head 2.3 below the rod 14, as at 25, and turn on the pivot into an arcuate camlock 27 slot in the end of the combined leveler rod 14. The pusher head 23 has at the bottom a supporting roll 28 which rides on the floor of the oven chamber dure ing the operation of drawing back the leveler rod 14.
On retracting the leveler rod 14 the pusher head 23 by means of rollers 25 rides on the oor of the ovenI chamber while bearing against the coke cake and thus pushes the latter out through the coke guide means16 on the coke side into the quenching car 8 as it is slowly moved along the oven battery in normal manner trans-- versely of the guide 16 so that the coke is placed in as uniform layer as possible on the inclined bottom 9. The' coal leveler and pusher head bar transporting machine 5 is operated from a station 29 from which the quenching car S is also directed by a remote control device available there for moving the quenching car. Quenching car 8 is then moved to the quenching tower not shown inthe drawing where the coke is quenched and, after quench-l ing, is conveyed to coke ramp 10 and is discharged fro the latter onto conveyor belt 12.
After placing the coke cake in the quenching car the pusher head 23 is again immediately pushed back through the oven chamber to the transporting frame 19 and after uncoupling the coal leveler rod 14 is again withdrawn from the oven chamber for use in a next chamberr in sequence, as conventional.
I claim:
l. Apparatus for combined levelling coal charges in, and pushing the finished coke cakes out of, horizontal coking chambers comprising: lche combination with' a lbattery of horizontal high coking chambers that are very narrow relative to their height and are arranged side by side in a row each having removable doors at their opposite horizontal ends, and a means alongside the coke Vside of said battery for sequentially receiving at different positions alongside the ends of different coking cfham- -bers hot coke therefrom for quenching the coke, of a pusherV head carriage movable alongside the opposite pusher side of the battery into different positions for registry with each of said chambers sequentially for pushing coke therefrom, a pusher head mounted on said pusher head carriage and movable therefrom into the pusher end of the ovens through the pusher side doorways, a coal leveler bar carriage movable on a trackway alongside the coke side of the battery, in spanning relation to said means for receiving hot coke, into different positions for pulling coke from, and leveling of coal in said chambers sequentially, a coal leveler bar mounted for horizontal reciprocation on said leveler bar carriage at a level for insertion into and reciprocation into and out of each of said coking chambers at the level of the tops of said horizontal chambers with actuating means and driving means for said leveler bar on said leveler bar carriage, said leveler bar being extendable completely through said chambers to have its free terminal end emerge at .the pusher side of the battery, and means for detachably interconnecting the free terminal end of the leveler bar With the pusher head while the latter is on the pusher head carriage for pulling the pusher head completely off the carriage, and along the bottom of the coking chambers against the resistance of the coke cakes therein, for pushing the coke cakes out to the means for receiving hot coke on the opposite coke side of the battery by means of the same mechanism for levelling a new coal charge in said coking chambers.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, and in which the means for detachable connection of the leveler bar with the pusher head comprises a lever camlock connected to the end of the leveler rod and hinged to the pusher head with the hingable part fast to the intermediate part of the pusher head.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 and in which a coke guide means is constituted as an integral part of the coal leveler bar carriage.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1 and in which the doors arranged on the pusher side of the battery opposite the coke side are provided near the gas collecting space with self-closing flaps which permit passage of the leveler bar in 'case the door is not opened.
