Coke ovens.-Apparatus for shifting coke oven &c. doors of the kind adapted to travel along the front of a battery comprises a door lifting member which by a single operation engages the door, tilts it outwards from its casing and then lifts it off the sill so that the .door carrying member may be backed away from the opening. The extractor mechanism is mounted on a carriage 9 travelling on a track extending along the front of the ovens and is carried hy a ram 10 movable transversely by a rack and pinion 11, 12. A housing 13 secured to the ram 10 has a projecting portion 14 from which is suspended by a link 17 a casting 16 having projecting arms 18, 19 engaging the door below the brackets 3, 4, the lower arms projecting further than the upper arms due to the pressure of springs 20 which hold the lower end of the casting outwardly. When the ram 10 is moved forwardly the arms 19 first engage the door compressing the springs 20 and causing the upper end of the casting 16 to swing forward and bring the arms 18 into contact with the door. On operation of the motor 38 a horizontal screw 36 is rotated, causing a nut 35 to travel along the screw and actuate lever 33 and the arms 31, 29 of a bell crank lever mounted on an extension 27 of the casting 16 so that a hook 30 engages the rod 7, and, by a rod 39 connecting an arm 40, a hook 41 engages the rod 8. Continued movement of the lever 33 causes an upward thrust to be exerted on the door, but as the casting 16 is movable the upward movement of the arms 29 ceases while the bell crank lever and the upper end of the casting are moved outwardly until the casting meets an abutment 42 pulling the upper end of the door outwardly. As soon as the outward movement is arrested continued movement of the lever 33 causes further movement of the bell crank lever about its pivot so that the weight of the door is taken from its sill and the ram may be moved away from the opening carrying the door with it. In replacing the door the movements described above take place in the reverse order.
