Discharging.-In apparatus for discharging vertical retorts a, of the kind comprising coke chambers b which enclose vertically movable plungers f and which are adapted to be swung about pivots c to discharge their contents, the movement of the chambers b is effected from a common reciprocating beam 5 through a system of levers which is self-locking when the chamber is closed and the beam 5 disconnected therefrom. The lever system comprises an arm 6 adapted to be connected to the beam 5 by a removable pin and to rotate a rod 9 which is mounted in fixed bearings and carries a pair of 'links 7 pivoted to levers 8 pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the chamber b. The arrangement is such that, when the chamber h is closed as shown at the left hand side of the Fig., the pivotal connections of the levers 8 with the chamber b and with the links 7 are in line. the chamber b being thus prevented from opening when the pin connecting the arm 6 and beam 5 is removed. Each chamber b is formed with an extension k, which closes the retort when the chamber is swung to its open position, and is provided at the upper end with a door m which, during the closing of the chamber and the subsequent raising of the plunger f, is held in the horizontal position by a chain n; when the plunger reaches the top of its stroke the chain n is released and the door m descends with the plunger to its inoperative position within the recess p.
