Skips.-In a skip A for carrying coal, coke, &c., the bottom doors are locked and unlocked by mechanism located within a housing B and actuated by tensioning the rope 10 or depressing the rod 17. Each door 12 is hinged to a side of the skip, and prevented from opening too far by a chain 1 and/or stops 2. The doors are engaged by two opposed pairs of pivoted dogs 3, each pair of which is connected by toggle links 4 and links 5, 6 to a rock-shaft 26. An arm 7 fixed to the shaft 26 is connected by a rod 8 to a lever 9 pivoted at one end in the upper edge of the skip, weighted at the other end 11, and secured to the rope 10. When the rope 10 is tensioned, the dogs 3 are withdrawn, and the doors fall. If the skip is lowered so that the doors bear on joists, &c., the doors will swing upwards and be locked autornatically, but if it is desired to close them from overhead the rod 17 is depressed and the doors raised by the consequent upward movement of the ropes 16. A rack on the rod 17 engages pinions 14 secured to pulleys 15 around which the ropes 16 pass. The upward movement of the rod 17 which occurs when the doors open is cushioned by a spring 18. In a modification, the doors are closed by the upward movement of ropes which pass over pulleys on the top of the skip and are secured to a cross-head moved vertically by a rod similar to the rod 17. Means also are provided on an extension of the cross-head for bringing the dogs 3 to unlatching position for the doors to close, and for permitting the retraction of the dogs by the weight 11.
