Abstract

Pivoted and sliding jaw wrenches.-A pivotedjaw wrench which can be adjusted quickly comprises an inner jaw 2 integral with a handle member 1 formed with a toothed rack 8 on its rear side. The outer jaw 4 is carried by a short member 3 pivoted at 5 to a strap member 6, the member 3 being formed with a detent 7 which is made to engage one of the teeth of the rack 8, the detent 7 taking the strain when the spanner is being used. To adjust the spanner, the member 3 is moved outwardly, freeing the detent 7 from the rack and thereby permitting the inner member 1 to be moved freely to the desired position, or to be withdrawn altogether. The member 1 can be used for driving bolts off nuts, or for loosening other screwed connections. In a modification, Fig. 3, the strap 6 is fitted with a fixed rack member 9 formed with an undercut portion 10 with which the detent 7 can be brought into engagement or freed therefrom, as desired, the strap 7 being formed with a slot in which the pivot 5 works. The rack on the member 1 is normally forced into contact with the rack 9 by means of a spring 11, and by pressing the strap against the action of spring 11 the rack 8 is freed and the member 1 can be adjusted.
