Wrenches.-A wrench comprises a pair of jaws mounted in a head so as to move obliquely outwards or inwards and at the same time relatively apart or together, and a handle pivoted to the head and so connected to the jaws that the latter are closed on the nut when the handle is turned in the operative direction, and opened by reverse movement of the handle, enabling the wrench to be used in the same manner as a ratchet wrench. As shown in Fig. 2, the rear angled portions of the jaws F, G are mounted in inclined guides formed by the edges of a jaw-block E and a pair of blocks B<1> secured between cover-plates B, to which the handle A is pivoted at a, the jaws being operatively connected by links H, H' to a lug D on the handle. A spring C normally maintains the jaws in retracted position. Instead of actuating the jaws by means of links, the handle may be formed with an enlaregd head having a slot eccentric to its part a to engage projections on the jaws. The wrench may be adapted for positive hand-grip by providing the head B with a second handle. The block E may be shaped, as shown, to engage hexagonal nuts, or square for square nuts, and one or both of the outer ends of the jaws F, G may be formed with an inward extension G<1>.
