WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 23. 1920.

I Oswald Bud h q %4MJ.,@W aw wrm Harmye oswALn none, or HOUSTON,
PATENT OFFICE.
TEXAS, ASSIGNOB TO ROLLER IBIT COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
WRENCH.
Be it known that I,' OSWALD DUDA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Houston, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings' Figure 1 is an elevation of the wrench with a portion in section,.the handle being shown in two positions, one indicated by dotted lines and the other by full lines.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the wrench. The wrench comprises a suitable form of head and as one form with which my invenobtained by pulling on the handle of an tion may be used I show a formation adapted to receive a hexagonal nut. This head '1 is provided with a forked portion 2 Within which lies the enlarged end 3 of a handle 4. The handle is pivoted at 5 to one side of the center line of the head and has a lateral extension 6 which works between the sides of the forked portion of the main head and is provided with a pin 7 acting as a limiting stop by coming in contact with the wall of the slots 8'formed in the sides of the forked portion. Theend face of the enlarged portion of the handle is formed in two planes 9 and 10 lying at an angle to each other and a spring 11 is interposed between the .end face 10 and the bottom of the space within the forked portion of the head. This spring normally presses the handle into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and serves to hold the main head and the handle against moving loosely in respect to each other, so that the wrench can be applied in close quarters to a nut or other part with the same facility as though the head portion of the wrench were rigidly fixed to the handle.
One object of the invention is to provide a wrench-for tightenin any threaded joint beyond the degree of tightness that can be ordinary wrench in the usual manner. In the use of the present wrench it is applied to the nut or other part to beturned and a pull on'the handle will bring it into the position relative to the head .or jaws as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The joint having been tightened to the limit that may Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 23, 1920. Serial No. 432,641.
wrench handle will be given a movement such as that used in operating a ratchet.
As above indicated, the spring serves to hold the handle and the jaw. or head is substantially fixed relation when the wrench is being placed in position, and thus by'the structure described we get substantially the effect of ajrigid wrench when placing it in position and the hammer blow is secured when the wrench is operated.
It will be understood that the above description and the accompanying drawing are to be regarded in an illustrative sense and not as limiting the invention to the form of part shown. The head of the wrench may be so shaped as to take articles other than of hexagonal form.
Neither do I limit myself to the jaw construction of the portion of the wrench, as shown,'which grips a part to be turned.
I claim as myinvention:
1. A wrench comprising a head having a pair of rigid jaws to engage the object, a handle pivoted to the head to one side of the center line between the jaws and having a lateral extension from said pivot reaching across'the center line and adapted, when the handle is turned on its pivot. to rock'to and from the head, said extension contacting with the head after the handle has moved freely through a certain arc in the direction to turn the object.
2. A wrench comprising a head having rigid jaws to engage the object, a handle ivoted to the head to one side of the center. ine ofthe jaws, and having an extension lying on the same side of the pivot with the center line, said extension contacting with the head'after a certain free movement of the handle has taken place in the lirection to turn the object, substantially as described. r
3. A wrench comprising a head having described.
4. A wrench comprising a head portion having jaws and a forked portion, a handle having an enlarged end pivoted within the forked portion to one side of the center line of the wrench, and a spring interposed between the enlarged end of the handle and the head portion of the wrench, substantially as described.
5. In combination in a wrench, a head portion, a handle portion pivoted to one side of the center line of the head portion and having a lateral extension, and a stop pin carried by-the handle, the head pQr-x tion having a slot to receive the stop pm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
OSWALD DUD-A.
