Abstract

Cam gears; beat or lift valves; slide valves, cylindrical and piston.-In order that the pressure of the initial steam supply shall have an effective turning movement on the crank, the steam is supplied to the cylinder after the dead centres have been passed. To avoid dead spaces greater than the normal clearance, the cylinder 2 is reciprocated by eccentrics on the shaft in such a manner as to increase the normal compression to the pressure of the steam supply. The admission is controlled by lift valves 7, 8 operated by oscillating cams 10, and the exhaust, which passes through a ported, stationary, surrounding casing 1, by the piston 14 in conjunction with the reciprocating cylinder 2.
