Abstract

Alloys of metals of the iron and chromium groups with silicon are made by utilizing the exothermic reaction which occurs between silicon and the metals at 1300-1300‹ C., and contain a silicide in a homogeneous form, with or without a eutectic mixture. For example, an alloy corresponding to the formula Fe2Si may be made by the exothermic reaction of 780 parts of iron and 220 parts of 90 per cent ferro-slicon. The formation of alloys containing manganese, nickel, cobalt, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, and uranium is also referred to.
