Abstract

1525738 Lubricating oils EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 24 Nov 1975 [13 Dec 1974] 48144/75 Heading C5E A hydrocarbon feedstock is catalytically hydrocracked and the product is distilled to provide a naphthenic lubricating oil, boiling in the range 600‹ F up to the initial boiling point of the feedstock and having a pour point of -60‹ F to +10‹ F and a viscosity index below 80, and a paraffinic lubricating oil, boiling largely above the initial boiling point of the feedstock and having (optionally after upgrading) a pour point of -10‹ F to + 30‹ F and a viscosity index of at least 79. The naphthenic and paraffinic oils can be upgraded by extraction with an aromatic-selective solvent, solvent or catalytic dewaxing and/or hydrogenation to improve U.V. stability and colour. The feedstock is suitably a vacuum distillate of a paraffinic or naphthenic crude oil and can be dewaxed prior to the hydrocracking. The hydrocracking can be carried out at 650-850‹ F and a hydrogen partial pressure of 500-1000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst such as (a) Mo and/or W together with Ni and/or Co on alumina or silica-alumina or (b) zeolite X, Y, L or faujasite together with alumina and/or silica and a hydrogenating metal in ion-exchanged or deposited form.
