Abstract

1493620 Catalyst for hydroconversion of hydrocarbons SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 16 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 54258/74 Heading C5E The hydroconversion of hydrocarbons is carried out using a fluorine-containing nickel-tungstenalumina catalyst which has a compacted bulk density of at least 0À8 g,/ml., comprises at least 3 parts by weight of nickel and at least 20 parts of tungsten per 100 parts alumina, and has been prepared from an alumina hydrogel, from which a xerogel having a compacted bulk density of less than 0À8 g./ml. would be obtained by drying at 120‹ C. and calcining at 550‹ C., by the following procedure: (1) if the pore volume quotient of said xerogel would be at least 0À5, then the catalyst is prepared by incorporating the metals, and optionally fluorine, into the hydrogel or a xerogel prepared by drying and calcining the hydrogel and then drying and calcining the composition; or (2) if the pore volume quotient of said xerogel would be less than 0À5, then the catalyst is prepared by incorporating the metals and at least part of the fluorine into the alumina hydrogel and drying and calcining the composition, provided that the quantity of fluorine incorporated into the hydrogel is such that a xerogel having a pore volume quotient of at least 0À5 would be obtained by drying and calcining the same alumina hydrogel if the same quantity of fluorine, but no metals, were incorporated therein. The catalyst suitably comprises 3-12 parts Ni, 20-75 parts W and 0À5-30 parts F per 100 parts alumina and at least part of the F content can be incorporated by in-situ fluoriding; the catalyst can be used in the sulphided form and can also comprise B and P components. The necessary bulk density of the final catalyst can be ensured by kneading, pressing or extruding the hydrogel if the incorporation of the metals and fluorine is not sufficient. The catalyst can be used for the preparation of high viscosity index lubricating oils by hydrocracking a waxy lube oil vacuum distillate, a deasphalted vacuum residue or a wax separated from a lubricating oil fraction; the hydrocracking can be carried out at 325-450‹ C. and 10-250 bar and followed by hydrofinishing at 225-400‹ C., distillation and dewaxing with recycle of the separated wax to the hydrocracking reaction. The catalyst can also be used in the production of gasoline and middle distillate by hydrocracking a flash distillate of crude oil at 370‹ C. and 130 bar. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,390,359.
