Locking nuts.-The end of a valve stem a of variable length is threaded and provided with a hollow nut b, having serrations g, Figs. 1 and 3, around its periphery. A cap c which retains the spring d is provided with similar serrations h, and with a key f, Fig. 4, which moves longitudinally in a keyway e cut in the valve stem. The nut and cap are thus prevented from rotating. The nut may be freed, when it is required to vary the effective length of the stem, by pressing the cap c inwards until the teeth g, h are out of engagement.
