Abstract

150,339. Budd Wheel Corporation, (Assignees of Fine, L.). Aug. 27, 1919, [Convention date]. Locking nuts.-Cap nuts 17 for securing detachable wheels on a permanent hub 2 are locked by a latch 23 movable axially on a guide-pin 26 against the action of a spring 27 and having a bevelled point 24 which projects through a slot 21 in the side of the nut and engages a ring of ratchet teeth 20 on the end of the permanent hub. In the construction described, the nut has a flange 18 bevelled to seat on the end of the detachable hub and is formed with two flat sides 31 to take the operating-spanner A. An opening is formed in the base of the flange and a groove 22 is formed in one of the sides 31 in line with the guide-slot 21 to take an arm 28 attached to the latch. The arm has a. turned-up end 29 which is adapted to engage an inclined face A<1> on the spanner and withdraw the latch from the ratchet teeth when the spanner is placed on the nut. The latch may be straight or curved and the guide-pin arranged centrally of the nut or near the periphery.
