Coating fabrics in long lengths. -In a machine for applying finishing paste to silk fabrics, of the kind in which an applying-roller with a resilient surface transfers the paste directly from a trough to one side of the silk which is pressed against the applying roller by a vieldinglymounted impression roller, and in which a regulating-roller cooperates with the applying-roller to determine the amount of paste so transferred, the regulating- roller is of hard material and is mounted in adjustable non-yielding bearings so that it may be adjusted to deform the rubber or other resilient covering of the applying-roller to a definite extent and control very exactly the amount of paste applied to the silk. The applying-roller 16 is driven at adjustable speed from the power shaft 2 by means of a friction disk 7, adjustable friction wheel 8, shaft 9, and devel-pinions 12, 13, and the impression roller 33 and paste-regulating roller 17 are driven by pinions on their shafts 34, 18, meshing with a pinion on the shaft 14 of the roller 16. The shaft 18 of the roller 17 is journaled in blocks 21 carried on the lower ends of a pair of pivoted arms 22, and is adjustable towards the applying-roller 16 by means of a pair of screws 26, which thread into the blocks 21 and are actuated by a hand-wheel 32 and geared pinions 30. A pointer on one of the blocks 21 cooperates with a scale on the machine frame to indicate the degree of deformation of the resilient roller. The shaft 34 of the impression roller 33 is mounted in a pair of arms 35 pivoted on a shaft 23, and the silk fabric in its passage through the machine passes over a guide roller 38 mounted on a shaft 36 connecting the free ends of the arms 35 so that the tension of the fabric round the guide roller 38 forces the impression roller 33 against the applying-roller. Cams 40 on the shaft 36 enable the impression roller to be raised clear for threading in the fabric before starting the machine. In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the regulating-roller is duplicated, one roller 59 being of hard rubber and the other roller 60 being of soft rubber. Each roller is geared to the applying-roller 16, and is mounted in a pair of arms 65 pivoted at 66 and adapted to be rocked by eccentrics 68, the deformation of the resilient surface of the applying-roller being indicated by pointers 71 and scales 72.
