[Class 42 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] In a machine for measuring running webs according to the parent Specification in which a feed roller is positioned between a pre-tensioning device and a draw roller appropriate to the measuring operation, which feed roller feeds the web faster than the draw roller can receive it and in which a feeler roller connected with the drive of the feed is disposed on the web, the lever carrying the feeler roller is under an automatically variable load, e.g. a spring pressure, corresponding to the displacement of the roller and is so connected by suitable means with the feed roller that the turning movement of the latter is regulated by the of the feeler roller, which is independently varied according to the flexibility of the web. The web passes over pre-tensioning bars 2, Fig. 1, feed roller 3, feeler roller 15 and draw roller 4. The feeler roller is carried by a lever 22, pivoted at 48 and counter-weighted adjustably at 46, and movable against the increasing pressure of a spring 49. The lever is connected by a spring 51 to a bellcrank lever 52, which tensions a braise-strap in contact with a drum 31. A gear 60, Fig. 2, is secured to the drum 31, and a driven gear 55 engages the gear 60 through a, pair of gears 58, 57 secured, to a pin carried by an arm fast on the shaft 20 of the rolller 3. The displacement of the roller 15 thus controls the drive of the roller 3 and the increasing pressure of the spring 49 enables the roller 15 to take up a different equilibrium position for webs of different flexibilities, so that all are measured in the desired stress-free condition.
