Turning-gear.-A compressed air starter comprises a piston a in a cylinder 'd, the stem b of the piston having screw-threads engaging a nut d<2> on the end of the cylinder, and having a clutch member b<3> for engagement with a clutch pin c' on the engine shaft. The cylinder d is free to move longitudinally and is prevented from rotation by guide members e<1> pivoted at e<2> in a fixed ring e and secured in the position shown by cotter pins e<4>. On the admission of compressed air through a port d<4>, the clutch b<3>, c<1> is brought into engagement and the continued movement of the piston relative to the cylinder effects the rotation of the stem b and the engine shaft by means of the nut d<2> and the thread on the stem. The piston may be returned by a spring or by the admission of compressed air behind the piston. The supply pipe for compressed air is flexible, telescopic, or hinged to allow for the movement of the cylinder d. When it is desired to turn the engine by hand, the guide members e<1> are released by withdrawing the cotter pins, and a starting-handle is applied to the squared end d<5> of the cylinder d. The threaded stem b of the piston then serves to disconnect the clutch if the engine starts backwards. In a modification, the guides e<1> are replaced by longitudinal guide-rods secured by a bayonet-joint on a rigid portion of the engine base.
