Abstract

Turning-gear.-In an electric or other starter for internal-combustion engines, a part such as a pinion movable automatically into engagement with an engine member is arranged to effect theadjustment of an engine part such as a carburettor, magneto, or timing-device. In the form shown, the starter pinion 13 is threaded upon a screw shaft 12 driven by hand or power through a spring 9 and a shaft 1 carrying a sprocket-wheel 6 or other driving-gear. When the screw shaff is driven by hand, the longitudinal movement of the pinion into mesh with the engine member 14<a> is assisted by a spring plunder 16 with a round head engaging between the teeth of the pinion. At the end of its meshing movement, the pinion displaces a ring 20, normally held in the position shown by a spring 21 and connected through a lever 22 pivoted at 23 on the casing 4 to a link 27, which is connected to an arm on the carburettor throttle, the magneto, or the ignition timing-device. The link is in two parts 27, 28 with an interposed spring 29. In a modification, Fig. 6, a dash-pot is interposed between the two parts 33. 34 of the link, comprising a piston 36 on the part 33 moving against a spring 37 in a cylinder 35 on the part 34. A port 38 is formed in the seat of a non-return ball valve 39 held slightly off its seat by an adjustable screw 40.
