Abstract
546,722. Starting. SANDERS, A. F., and FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J. April 5, 1941, No. 4568. [Class 7 (v)] A compression-ignition engine having a super-charger 13 directly coupled to the engine is started by means of electric ignition and a petrol or like carburettor 33 connected with the induction pipe 19 (between the supercharger chamber 18 and the engine) through an automatic valve 66 which can open when a valve between the chamber 18 and the carburettor connection is closed, and vice versa. As shown the chamber 18 is connected by the induction pipe 19 to an admission valve 20 on the engine cylinder 11, as in Specification 539,423. Fuel is normally injected by a pump 26 into a combustion chamber 21 having a sparking plug 23 for starting. A spring-pressed piston 43 in the wall of the chamber 18 actuates a bell-crank 45 connected at 47 to the petrol cock 35 of the carburettor 33, at 49 to the ignition switch 39, at 51 to an arm 52 of disc valve 30 between the chamber 18 and the induction pipe, and at 54 to a lever 55 for moving the control rod 28 of the fuel pump 26 to the inoperative position. At starting, with the valve 30 closed, the engine is turned and mixture drawn in from the carburetter 33 through the automatic valve 66 in the pipe 32 is ignited by the plug 23 until the pressure in the chamber 18 is sufficient to actuate the piston 43, opening the valve 30, cutting off the ignition and the carburettor and allowing the fuel pump 26 to come into action. In modifications, the valve 30 is operated manually by a rod connected to the arm 52, or is replaced by a poppet valve closed by a' light spring and opened by a piston exposed to the pressure in the chamber 18. The control rod 28 of the fuel pump may also be actuated from another piston actuated by the pressure in the chamber 18, a bevelled disc on the piston rod bearing on the end of the control rod.
