Abstract

[Also in Group XXVII] In an engine having a scavenging or supercharging compressor 1 connected to the engine inlet manifold 4, a starting mechanism comprising a throttle valve 8 for closing the end of the manifold remote from the compressor 1, a fuel injector 5 for directing fuel into the chamber so formed and a sparking-plug 6 for producing a spark in the chamber, the products of combustion formed by igniting the fuel-air mixture in the chamber rotate the compressor 1 and hence the engine. The injector 5 is supplied with fuel by a pump 12 of the piston, as shown, or diaphragm type, having an operating rod 17 which may be actuated directly or by a handle 27 through a compression spring 26; a projection 19 on the rod 17 co-operates with a switch 23 in the primary of a coil 24, the secondary of which is connected to the plug 6, the switch lever 20 being urged into constant abutment with the projection 19 by a spring 22.
