Abstract

149,426. Shepherd, C. K. May 13, 1919. Spray carburettors -The carburettor comprises .a nozzle 15, an annular float chamber 5 surrounding the mixing-chamber 2, and a sliding throttle valve 3 provided with mixture outlet ports 20, the lower end of the throttle valve controlling the inlet of air. The interior of the throttle valve 3 is conical, and may be of constant taper, or the taper may be convex or concave. The ports 20 extend at an angle of forty-five degrees to the axis of the throttle valve, and are separated by thin webs 21. The throttle valve 3 may be operated by a bell-crank lever, one end of which engages a groove near the bottom of the valve, or the valve may be provided with teeth which engage a pinion 23 on the spindle of the throttle lever 25. A bypass 22 is provided for slow running, small air holes 26 being formed in the bottom of the throttle valve to supply the necessary air. The float - chamber is formed by a glass cylinder 5 clamped between the upper part 4 and the lower part 1 of the carburettor body, and communicates with a small reservoir at the base of the nozzle 15 through three symmetrically-arranged tubes 14. The float 8 is pivoted at 9 and co-operates with a spring-pressed fuel inlet valve 10 mounted in a detachable carrier 11. A needle valve may project upwardly into the nozzle to regulate the fuel supply, and the upper portion of the carburettor may be surrounded by a hot-water jacket. The carburettor is attached to the inlet manifold by an interchangeable flanged member 27 detachably secured to the upper part 4 of the body.
