Surface carburettors.-In a supplementary carburettor for supplying a starting mixture, a single plug cock d attached directly to the induction pipe controls the admission of the starting mixture to the induction pipe and the supply of fuel to a carburetting chamber a mounted on the cock casing. In one form, Figs. 1, 4, and 5, the chamber a contains absorbent material and is provided with air inlets a<3> protected by a flange a<4> and a fueladmission nozzle h adjusted by a needle valve i. The cock d has a passage d<1> controlling the fuel supply to the nozzle h, which is connected by a fuel pipe to the side of the casing c. The cock also has a two-way passage d<2>, d<3> controlling the mixture passages k, k<1>, and a gauze-covered air inlet at the side of the cock. for supplying extra air to the mixture or to the induction pipe. In a modification. Fig. 6, the chamber a carries a fuel container l aud the fuel supply from the container to the chamber a is controlled by a valve q, the stem of which is actuated bv a cam surface o<3> on the cock d. The container l is supplied by a pipe l<1>, and the supply is controlled by a float n carrying a valve o controlling a suction pipe m leading from the passage k<1> below the cock d. In another form, the chamber a is annular and encloses a fuel container fitted with a float-controlled inlet valve; the supply of fuel to the annular chamber is controlled by passages in the cock d.
