Abstract

148,514. Soc. Anon. des Etablissements L. Bleriot. Feb. 4, 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Toothed and friction gearing.-Relates to disconnectible friction and toothed gearing, particularly applicable to engine starting gear of the kind described in Specification 128,900. In the form shown, an electrically driven shaft b carries a friction wheel b<1> with several taper flanges engaging with a similar wheel c<1> secured to a shaft c loose in an arm a<1> free to rotate around the axis of the shaft b within limits provided by stops h<1>, h<2>. When the shaft b rotates, the inertia of the parts causes the arm a<1> to swing so that the wheel c<1> engages a wheel d, split, for convenience of assembly and secured on the engine shaft. When the engine starts and the resistance ceases, the arm automatically returns and disengages the gearing. To render the action more certain, brakes may be applied between the arm a<1> and the shaft b or the shaft c or both. In the form shown, a cork brake-block c<3> is carried on a spring-controlled lever e', but one or more blocks may be acted on directly by one or more springs. To remove the brakes when the engine starts, a centrifugally operated brake may be used, or the brake may be actuated by two magnetic coils, one of which is arranged in a shunt. to or in series with the electromotor, and may be brought into action slightly before the latter to apply the brake, the other being arranged in a shunt to the armature and effectively opposing the first coil only when the armature attains a predetermined speed. The braking-effect may be obtained by tightening the bearings or by setting them askew. To prevent jamming of the wheel c' between the wheels b<1>, d, the motor may be carried on a pivot f so that it may swing against the action of a spring g. The friction wheels may be replaced by toothed wheels, which may have very pointed teeth or may be so arranged as to dispense with the need of the stop h<1>. Cylindrical friction rollers may be used in combination with thetoothed wheels.
