Abstract
207,774. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Gilson, R. M.). Nov. 29, 1922, [Convention date]. Securing toothed wheels on shafts.-In a frictional driving mechanism, described in connection with an electric relay, means are provided for varying the frictional grip and thus the shockabsorbing power according to the direction of rotation of the driving shaft. Riveted to the shaft 27 a.re a disc 21 and a smaller disc 26 to which is anchored one end of a spring 25 of which the other end is anchored to a disc 24. The pinion 20, loose on the shaft 27, is located between friction discs 22 and drives a segment 9, which at the end of its travel in either direction strikes a fixed stop. As will be seen from the Figure, rotation of the shaft 27 and disc 26 in one direction uncoils the spring and tends to augment the pressure between the disc 24 and pinion 20, thus ensuring substantially positive rotation of the latter until the segment strikes the stop. Rotation in the opposite direction coils up the spring, thus reducing the pressure of the friction discs 22 and allowing the clutch to slip more readily when the pinion is checked.
