Abstract

Turning-gear.-Change-speed gearing interposed between a starting-motor and the engine shaft so that the rate of speed transmission is increased during starting comprises a pinion 17 on the armature shaft, planet-wheels 18 the carrier of which is integral with the driven shaft 3, and an internally toothed ring 19. In operation, the ring 19 is first held against rotation through the pressing of the non-rotatable ring 27 against the balls 36. This pressure may be relieved by a pedal through links 30 &c. and a cam 51, clutch plates 40, 41 being pressed into engagement at the same time, whereby the whole gear rotates solidly. The switch controlling the battery and motor circuit is operated by the same pedal, but owing to the provision of a slotted link 31, the circuit is closed prior to the engagement of the plates 40, 41. Further reducing-gearing, comprising toothed wheels and a ratchet clutch, is interposed between the shaft 3 and the crank-shaft.
