Abstract

1482801 Transit-time tubes SIEMENS AG 15 Aug 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 35890/74 Heading H1D A collector-assembly for an electron beam tube-e.g. a transit-time tube-includes a star shaped electrode 15 having arms 16, at least some of which branch into two or more end portions terminating in free space, and centrally mounted adjacent to, but insulated from, the closed end of the collector, to reduce the escape from the collector of secondary and reflected electrons, which are deflected with a radially outward component of motion, rather than axially back along the beam path. The arms 16 may additionally be twisted in propeller fashion, to enhance their effect, and may increase in width s, Fig. 2, with distance from the axis, to prevent too rapid a decrease in shadowing factor with increasing radius. As shown, the collector is formed by a metal entrance member 5, and a sequence of carbon electrodes 6, 7, 8, 9, and a carbon closure member 2, held at progessively smaller potentials, while the central insulated electrode 12 carrying the starshaped electrode 15 and an eccentrically disposed rod electrode 14 is held at or close to cathode potential. Rod electrode 14 aids velocity sorting by reason of the transverse electric field it produces, and the projection into the collector of the electrodes 6 to 9 further aids trapping of returning electrons. The carbon electrodes are insulated from one another by ceramic spacer rings 4, and are split and provided with metal inserts 11 to ensure vacuum tightness.
