Abstract
1482044 Coating by laser fusion CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 4 March 1975 [4 March 1974 24 Jan 1975] 8882/75 Headings B2E and B2L [Also in Divisions C7 and Fl] A method of fusibly bonding a solid powder to a metal article comprises, (i) depositing a band of powder onto the article, (ii) melting the coating material by focussing a continuous wave laser beam thereon and (iii) subsequently removing the focussed beam to allow the coating material to cool and solidify, thereby providing a fused coating with a thin interstitial bond between it and the metal article. In a preferred embodiment, a rotatable disc 20 is mounted on an oblique plate 18 and removably receives the face of an austenitic chrome nickel silicon steel valve 14 from an internal combustion engine. A chromium/cobalt alloy powder is fed through a tube 34 whose nozzle 38 is so close to the valve seat 26 that powder is deposited only when the valve is rotated. The part of the valve seat adjacent the nozzle remains horizontal by virtue of the obliquity of the plate 18. On rotation of the valve, the powder is moved into the path of a focussed laser beam 50 directed onto the valve seat by a universally mounted mirror 40, and melts but solidifies immediately on leaving path of the beam. In an alternative embodiment the powder is mixed with a temporary binder and deposited as a ring on the valve seat which is similarly rotated beneath the beam. The beam is preferably of annular shape.
