Abstract
1447969 Granulating material by laser melting CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 6 May 1975 [20 Sept 1974] 18938/75 Heading C7X Metals, ceramics or cermets are granulated by directing a coherent beam of electromagnetic radiation against the stock material and directing a gas jet on to the molten material to propel the molten material away from the stock material as fine droplets which are solidified to form irregularly shaped particles. As shown in Fig. 1 the stock material 52 is fed into the chamber 12 and a laser beam 42 is directed at the rod while an inert gas such as argon or helium is introduced into the chamber via tube 68. The molten drops are projected from the rod by the inert gas issuing from nozzle 70 and fall on to an angled water cooled copper plate 73 prior to discharge into container 40 via funnel 34. The stock material 52 may be a mild steel wire or a steel tube containing ferrous and boron powders which are fused to form boron steel granules.
