Abstract

148,031. Dickinson, R. Y. June 6,1919. Non-electric ignition.-Relates to means for effecting ignition by the heat generated by rapidly compressing air in an auxiliary cyiinder, and consists in an air-compressor 11, the plunger 10 of which is reciprocated by gearing operated by the engine, and which has a valve-controlled passage 15 in communication with the combustion space of the engine cylinder. The valve spring 18 maintains the valve on its seat until the valve stem 16 is engaged by a pin 21 on the plunger 10. The driving-gear may embody a timing-device. According to the Provisional Specification, the compressed air may render incandescent a platinum wire, which is then placed in communication with the combustion space.
