Abstract

1466074 Refractory bodies and coatings KAMAN SCIENCES CORP 24 Aug 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 40125/73 Headings C1J and C1A Bodies or coatings having interconnected porosity and comprising a nitride other than boron nitride, a carbide other than silicon carbide and boron carbide, a boride, an intermetallic, a ferrite or a metal alloy are densified, hardened and strengthened by impregnating with a solution of a soluble chromium compound, drying and heating to convert the chromium compound to chromium oxide, and repeating the impregnation, drying and heating steps at least once. Many suitable materials from which the initial body or coating can be formed are exemplified including molybdenum, titanium and vanadium borides, chromium and vanadium carbides, iron silicon and titanium nitrides. The aqueous impregnating solutions exemplified are chromic acid, chromic acid having Cr 2 O 3 dissolved therein, chromium chloride, magnesium chromate, magnesium dichromate, zinc dichromate and mixtures of magnesium or zinc chromate with chromic acid.
