Abstract
1466076 Refractory bodies and coatings KAMAN SCIENCES CORP 24 Aug 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 17605/76 Divided out of 1466074 Headings C1J and C1A Bodies or coatings having interconnected porosity and comprising a nitride, a carbide, a silicide, a boride, an intermetallic, a ferrite, a metal or a metal alloy are densified, hardened and strengthened by impregnating with a solution of a soluble chromium compound also containing a dissolved metal oxide other than chromium trioxide (CrO 3 ) or with a solution of a metal chromate and then drying and heating the impregnated body or coating to convert the chromium compound into chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ). Many suitable materials from which the initial body or coating can be formed and many suitable impregnating solutions are listed. The examples relate to the treatment of bars of SiC, bodies pressed from Cr 3 C 2 , SiC, Si 3 N, TiN, or Fe 4 N and having a potassium silicate binder, bodies pressed from Ti, Ce, Al, Ni, or Mn+Fe metal powders, oxalate coatings on steel or titanium, anodized coatings on alumium, chromium plating on steel, and chromium oxide coatings on titanium; the impregnating solutions used are magnesium chromate, magnesium or zinc dichromate, magnesium or zinc chromate containing added chromium trioxide and a solution made by partially reducing chromic acid with carbon. In the examples the impregnation and curing cycle can be repeated up to twelve times.
